Chepito

We first became aware of Chepito through Esteban, the head elder of the Muy Muy Church. Esteban told us that Chepito was a worthy poor man. In time, we observed that for ourselves. Chepito faithfully came to church every week, bringing his 4 year-old granddaughter with him. Anna and I tried to befriend Chepito’s granddaughter. The granddaughter is extremely shy. I was helping in the children’s Sabbath School. I tried to get the granddaughter to attend Sabbath School, but to no avail. She remained in the adult class with her grandfather. Anna and I kept trying. Eventually, she felt more comfortable and came to the class. Victory!

We began inviting Chepito to our home for Sabbath lunch. Chepito is a quiet man, and he is friendly to us. Although he has medical and material needs, he never asks for anything.

About a year ago Esteban alerted us that Chepito's housing situation was not good. He needed a new roof. Every rainfall, his belongings got wet because of his old metal and plastic roof. We bought new corrugated metal, and another church member installed it on Chepito's house. Giving to Chepito was easy because of the time we spent with him observing his faithfulness and seeing his needs. He has endeared himself to us. All of us agreed to assist him.

A couple of months ago Anna thought about Chepito. She wanted to do something for him, but she didn’t remember until last Sabbath, when Esteban told the church that Chepito had been assaulted and robbed. Anna determined that week that she would bring his family some food and a little money. On Monday, she took some rice, beans, and tomatoes to his house. He wasn't home, so she gave them to his daughter, along with a little money. It wasn't much, but Anna wants Chepito to see that she cares about him.
